The movie begins with Professor John Oldman (David Lee Smith) packing his belongings onto his truck, preparing to move to a new home. A Professor who unexpectedly resigns from the local university. As is with a close knit community, his friends and colleagues go around to his house to get an explanation of his sudden decision to resign. Astonished, hurt and disappointed, his friends press him on the reasons for his departure. Reluctantly, John decides to tell them the truth, something he has never told anyone before.

The Man From Earth has neither aliens nor spaceships, but it adheres firmly to the underlying principle of science-fiction as a genre of ideas. Essentially, it regards human behaviour with an outside alien eye in order to ask fundamental questions about the way we live and the society we have built up around us. And what better way to question the principles by which we live today than by asking - what if…?
